Children have options for support. Teachers and students need support. They give a fresh perspective into students' behaviors. They are always calm in the storm. They work together to support and help all children. It takes a village. We share valuable information as it happens!
We collaborate by working together to help all of the students in the school succeed.
Theme: Better Together
February 7-11, 2022
Counsellor's are better together because we have the best student's interest at heart.
We are each other's support.
We share resources and collaborate.
Good Morning,
Today is the first day of National School Counselling Week. The theme of this year's week is "Better Together." To help support your success, I often collaborate with other school staff. We are all here for you, working together to serve your needs as you navigate school and life.
Just like I do, you often work in teams to achieve a common goal. Look around, how are you working in teams today? Are you collaborating on school projects, helping a friend or playing a sport? We are so much stronger together - and sometimes, you encounter work that requires more than one person to complete.
As your school counsellor, I'm here to help you build your teamwork skills so you can be successful in groups both big and small. If you are struggling with teamwork, come and see me, and let's talk about how you can develop these skills. I work on my teamwork skills every day.
Have a great Monday!

Decision Making
P1 Class
Learning Intention - Learn the Department of Education's three decision making steps
Success Criteria - I can make safe, responsible, respectful and helpful decisions
Good day Parents/Guardians,
I will be scheduling Individual Planning Meetings with all P5 students with their Parents/Guardians. The purpose of this meeting during a student’s P5 year is for the Counsellor to reconnect with parents and to encourage families to have discussions about life after high school.
This meeting is approximately 40 minutes and the discussion focuses on the students’ characteristics and interactions with peers, the importance of how performance in school relates to future career planning, and important tips for success on their educational journey and a Parent Interview.
The Ministry of Education is encouraging parents/guardians to stay involved in every aspect of their child’s academic journey. You will have other opportunities to participate in Individual Planning Meetings during your child’s M2, S1 and S3 school years. However, if you have any questions or concerns during any other times it is recommended that you call the school to set up a meeting to discuss your child’s progress. Your involvement in the educational planning of your child is critical and we solicit your support in this process.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I pray that all of you are safe and well during this time. The outbreak of Covid-19 has heightened anxiety levels world-wide and has caused most of our island to shut down. From social distancing to nearly empty grocery store shelves, many parents are anxious and fearful of the unknown. This stress can easily be trickled down to our children if we are not careful. The following are some ways we can assist our children with managing anxiety levels relating to this epidemic.
1. Stay calm. Model appropriate coping skills. See below the Coping Skill Strategies Wheel
2. Make sure you have all the essential items your family needs
3. Be honest to your children about what is going on. Information needs to be developmentally appropriate to avoid overwhelming them. A good resource is the story ‘The Yucky Bug’ written by Julia Cook. You can find the book on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD9KNhmOCV4. Also, The Dr. Binocs Show has a 6 minute age appropriate video clipping that can be found on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-JbDMYmAQM
4. Answer their questions. Keeping children in the dark can cause their imagination to run wild.
5. Do fun things with them to alleviate boredom (play board games, go on a nature walk, cook together, do some gardening and artwork)
6. Teach your children how to be safe during these times (hygiene, social distancing, eating healthy foods to strengthen immune systems…)
7. Try to keep your child on their school schedule so they can have some level of normalcy. From now until school goes back in, I will be checking my emails regularly.
Feel free to contact us via email regarding any questions or concerns you might have. We are always happy to assist.
Warm Regards,
Sophia Burch Trevor Williams

To the tune Ol TIme Road song
I'm goin teach those kids not to use those drugs cause they're harmful and dangerous
I'm goin teach those kids not to use those drugs cause they're harmful and dangerous
Don't do those drugs they are bad for you
They will give you red eyes and yellow nails too
Can nobody tell me nothing?
You can't tell me nothing
Can nobody tell me nothing?
You can't tell me nothing
Feeling the peer pressure
It’s goin be a disaster
Need to find a teacher
So I can get a lecture
My life is movie
Someone can and save me
Can nobody tell me nothing?
You can't tell me nothing
Can nobody tell me nothing?
You can't tell me nothing
Head up walking by
Living like a superstar
Got good grades
I deserve all that
I'm saying NO til I can't no more
I’m goin teach those kids not use those drugs cause they're harmful and dangerous
Got no stress
I’ve been through all that
I just study well
So I can kick on back
I'm goin stand up
Until I can't no more
Can nobody tell me nothing?
You can't tell me nothing
Can nobody tell me nothing?
You can't tell me nothing!

PRIDE Club
Introducing Somerset’s Primarys PRIDE Club for the 2019-2020 school year.
This is an excellent opportunity the students to be Leaders in the Community and School. Enjoy some fun activities and learn how to be drug free through songs/energizers, spreading the word to future students at Somerset Primary, going into the Community and representing PRIDE Club and Somerset Primary. This experience will enhance their life skills through coping skills and decision making lessons.
They will meet other students from the schools in Bermuda that participate in PRIDE club as well.

Pride Club Members
Thank you parents for your donations for the “Share in the Christmas Spirit” drive. We have an overwhelming amount of non-perishable items that will benefit those less fortunate. It is important for students to understand how community service supports the wider community.
